Working as a live-in carer with our agency, a leading specialist care agency, is the ideal role for those people looking for rewarding and flexible care work in the UK. It is a really rewarding care job as you are working with adults and children who are paralysed as a result of a spinal cord injury.
A live-in care job with our agency is based on pre-arranged assignments throughout the UK so you can choose when to work and when not to. When you are working the client provides free food & accommodation. When you are not working you can stay in our staff accommodation!
As a leading specialist care agency, our philosophy is to enable our physically disabled clients to live independently at home by providing fully trained live-in carer to support them in their own home. That's why we refer to our care staff as PAs and not carers because your role is to work under the direction of the client.
Please note that you must be 21 years or older* and hold a full driving licence to work for us. This is because you may be required to drive the clients car. NB You do not need to own a car to carry out this care work.

Role of a PA
The role of the PA is to work on a live-in basis with our physically disabled clients, assisting them with everyday tasks. Care assistant jobs last between one and three weeks and the care work may include getting the client in and out of bed, washing, dressing, cooking, cleaning, shopping, personal care, toileting and general household tasks. It may also be necessary to drive the clients vehicle and accompany them to work, social events, appointments or even on holiday.
Our agency provides comprehensive training in care work, so no previous experience of care work is necessary, although it is essential to have the desire to be involved in a truly rewarding and socially minded career. There are also opportunities to study towards formal qualifications in care work leading to opportunities to apply for more senior care assistant jobs.

Job Description
Position Summary
Working under the direct supervision of the client, the Personal Care Assistant is responsible for their day-to-day support needs as described in the PA Job Description and the clients Service User Plan.
Job Responsibilities
* Assisting with Personal Care, including skin care, bathing, shaving, oral care, toileting (including management of bladder & bowels), dressing, hair care.
* Enabling mobility, including Moving & Handling transfers, pushing wheelchair, checking of specialist equipment e.g. wheelchair seat cushion, driving of clients vehicle, as directed.
* Dietetics, including assistance with menu planning, preparing, serving and storing of foods.
* Assist client to fulfil activities of daily living e.g. working, leisure, education.
* Assist with medications as prescribed by medical team.
* Dealing with correspondence & financial matters as requested.
* Day to day household tasks e.g. changing beds, laundry, ironing, shopping.
* Respect for client confidentiality and discretion at all times.
* Negotiate breaks with client to ensure that these are consented and mutually suitable, whilst monitoring working hours which should not exceed an average of between 8 and 10 per day.
* Reporting & Recording as per company procedure.
* Commitment for identifying & fulfilling ongoing personal development within Active Assistance.
* Adhering to company policies and procedures at all times.
Training
All PAs are required to attend and successfully complete our comprehensive 5-day residential training course in care before starting work with our physically disabled clients. The training course is delivered by our own specialist training team and takes place at our dedicated training facilities in Sevenoaks, Kent.
On successful completion of the Induction Programme, all PAs receive certificates for First Aid, Safer People Handling and Care in accordance with Skills for Care Training Standards.
As driving and language skills are so important to our clients we also arrange for additional coaching in these areas for those PA candidates who come from outside of the UK.
Annual update training is provided to ensure that your care skills and knowledge remain current while you are working as a PA with Active Assistance.
Our agency is an accredited NVQ Training Centre and so we also offer the opportunity for further training up to NVQ Level 4 in Health & Social Care after 6 months work experience.
Work Patterns & Pay
As a live-in carer, you should expect to be available for work between 21 and 25 days each month. The normal work pattern is 2-3 weeks on assignment (8-10 hours per day) followed by time off. Organising the work pattern this way ensures the Client receives the continuity of care that is so critical whilst allowing you to take breaks on a regular basis. Many of our PAs who come to the UK on a working holiday use this time off to travel.
As a PA working for our agency, you can expect:

* 6 monthly salary reviews, taking your salary up to ?504 per week after 2 years.

Example Assignments
Below is a selection of the assignments available to PAs working as part of our team.
Birmingham. If you like working as part of a team then this client is for you. Our client is a 22 year old female with a spinal cord injury who has two PAs working with her. She lives in a newly adapted house which allows her to live an independent life and she has many family and friends who live by - so there is much coming and going. You will need to be a very confident driver if you want to work with this client as going out, shopping and meeting friends are very important to her. You MUST be a non-smoker.
Bournemouth. Want to enable a physically disabled young man to live independently? Active Assistance is looking for a lively, active and social male who enjoys cooking, to work with our 23 year old client in Bournemouth. He enjoys getting into the kitchen, and is an avid Leeds United fan! There are lots of friends and family who visit, and he also enjoys going out.
Dorset. Our spinal cord injured 36 year old female client lives in a remote location in Dorset and loves reading and painting. Although the location is remote the household is very busy as she shares this house with a physically disabled man who runs his business from these premises. You will need to be a confident driver if you are going to work with this client as her two other loves are socialising and shopping. If you think you would enjoy a mixture of beautiful countryside surroundings with frequent trips into town then this could be the ideal client for you.
Portsmouth. Our 26 year old male client with a spinal cord injury lives with his partner and son. He enjoys socialising, fishing, listening to music and going to the pub. You need to have high domestic standards and be a strong driver to allow our client to get out and about. If you feel you could support a young male with his busy lifestyle and family life then this may be the client for you.
Sheffield. Our physically disabled 33 year old female client is looking for a PA with a high standard of domestic skills. She requires the house to be clean, tidy and dust free. She enjoys shopping and maintains a busy social network. You will also be required to look after her cat. If you like the sound of this clients busy social life then this client may be for you.
Surrey. Socialising, films and computing are the main interests of this physically disabled 24 year old man. He needs his PA to support him in living independently and to assist him with his daily routine. Our client has lots of friends and family who live close by and so there is plenty of social activity with this assignment.
PERSONAL CARE ASSISTANT
Candidate Profile
- Age/Sex: 25-40 years, 80:20 female bias
- Experience: Previous care work/healthcare experience preferred; No formal qualifications required
- Skills: Full manual gear change driving licence required ? valid in the UK for duration of time worked here
- Work permit/Visa: Candidates must be able to work legally in the UK for at least 2 years
- Language: Fluent English speakers
- Police Check: Please include if available for home country.

- Passport confirming citizenship and visa showing right to work in the UK
- Full driving licence for manual car
